Meet Gayle the Gecko! This amigurumi crested gecko crochet pattern is one of the cutest lizards around. She is sure to become one of your favorite crochet patterns to create!
What is it about a crested gecko that is so enchanting?
Is it the big shining eyes surrounded by the cutest little spikes resembling eyelashes? Perhaps it is the way they always look like they are smiling and saying hello. Either way I find them simply irresistible, and I adore them so much. I knew I had to create a gecko crochet pattern to join the reptiles in my pattern library. I just know you will love Gayle the gecko as much as I do. She was a joy to design, and is quickly becoming a favorite face around here.
Crocheting Gayle
Gayle the Gecko amigurumi is created using 55 yards of worsted weight yarn and 10 yards of 4ply mercerized cotton. You will be using both a 4mm and 2.75mm hooks when crocheting Gayle.
I have found Malabrigo Rios and Scheepjes Catona to be a wonderful yarn pairing for this pattern. The colors are rich with endless combinations, and just one hank of Rios and a single 25g skein of Catona will create 4 lovely geckos! Of course, you are going to want to grab some amazing Suncatcher Craft Eyes in 15mm cat style. These eyes help to bring those smiling faces to life! Gayle is shown here with masquerade eyes, however the galaxy eyes (as seen in Flynn) are another fantastic choice.
Gayle is an intermediate level pattern. While she is easier than some in that skill level, and created with simple base stitches, she utilizes some reverse stitching and has a few tricky sections. During creation, you will both back stitch and whip stitch to join pieces.

Fun Facts about Crested Geckos
- Nicknamed eyelash geckos due to the ridges of spikes above their eyes.
- Unique critters, no two are the same due to variations in colors and patterns.
- Rely on licking their eyes to moisten them, as they do not have eyelids.
- Crested geckos are omnivores that grow to about 10 inches in length.
- Native to New Caledonia they were once thought to be extinct! They were rediscovered after a storm more than 25 years ago.
- Wild Crested geckos are a protected species. Captive bred bloodlines are one of the most widely kept species of geckos.

Can you tell me the colors for the light color gecko above for both yarns.
The light colored one, the main color is from Hobby Lobby, but it is not the ILTY line. It was next to it in the store and was Yarn Bee…it’s like a sandstone texture appearance of a mustard and grey. I do not have the label, and I don’t typically use the yarn so I do not know it offhand, or if it is still available. It’s pretty close to a dusty mustard color shade so should be easy to find similar, I think Vannas Choice by Lion Brand has a close match. (that Gayle was made back in Spring of 2021 when I designed the pattern, before the gap in finalizing for release). The cotton however, is Scheepjes Catona cotton (4ply) in shade 404.

Gayle is actually pretty easy for an intermediate pattern, but the thinner yarn for the eyelashes/ spikes seems to be the area with the most challenge as its very small bits, and you can always message me or join our community with the links within for any help should you decide to give her a go.
