Flynn the Flying Fox Bat

The design begins

I waited what felt like forever to be able to bring one of these amazing animals to life. After 5 years of growing within my own skills of crochet, in August of 2020, I finally felt I was able to begin the journey. I spent countless hours studying these magnificent creatures and smiling while watching adorable baby bat videos (i dare you not to!), while learning more about this incredible species.

Those days of research turned into days spent sketching out the more detailed sections followed by hours spent deciding which yarns helped portray the different textures of their delicate wings and fuzzy bodies best. Finally it was time to start working out the process of crocheting ( and much frogging) while constructing the pattern itself. Finally, after what felt like eons, Flynn fell off my crochet hook and right into the hearts of many! And was even better than I could have dreamed.

This crochet pattern may not seem for the weak of heart, however no part inside of it is actually difficult to construct. He uses all common crochet stitches for his instructions, he just has several parts to join. With Flynn, I include a handy video to help with assembly! About the Pattern

Flynn uses double stranded worsted weight acrylic yarn held together for his body, in 3 different color blocking sections throughout. After you finish crocheting it you then use a pet slicker brush to make it furry! This method helps it to work up faster, as well as creating a multicolored fuzz once it is fluffed out for a fantastic speckled effect. A final touch for his face, gorgeous gold galaxy eyes from Suncatcher Craft Eyes, allow his curious personality to shine through.

For his majestic wings, we use a single strand of acrylic yarn, Caron Simply Soft I find works best! It’s texture is more of a thinner weight and it holds a sheen. When finished it stands out from the fuzziness of the body perfectly. Each wing is just shy 20″ long! (some will overlap the back and legs during assembly)

For his fingers and toes, we use a DK weight cotton yarn. I highly suggest Paintbox Cotton DK. It is a wonderful cotton that has a more matte like finish than acrylic, and is easy to obtain online. Using cotton adds a different texture aesthetic, and the DK yarn adds a more sturdy housing for the floral wire that will be threaded within to enable him to hang as well as bend his wings or wrap them around.

A crochet bat of many colors

I have made Flynn in several color combinations already! His traditional grey black and orange colors look fantastic. A cream and white version with pink details turned out captivating. Bright red and purple? Well I do believe the picture speaks for itself! I believe him to be a creature that will look stunning in many creative color choices! My testers had a blast choosing colors to create and many beautiful colors came to life!
